I received an email today with a story I think all homeschooling families, especially Catholic ones will really appreciate. It is about a true hero of homeschoolers.

She still lives in Mexico, New York, a very unassuming older woman. To look at her, one would not suspect her story, let alone the movement she propelled into the headlines.

2012 New England Catholic Homeschool Conference

The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the annual New England Catholic Homeschooling Conference (NECHC) on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Saint Monica Parish in Methuen, Massachusetts, which is located in the Archdiocese of Boston. This is a wonderful opportunity for homeschooling families to support each other, browse different curricula for sale and listen to the wisdom of speakers as they share their own homeschooling experiences. We will update our website once all of our speakers have confirmed.

The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts, located one hour north of Boston, has an array of summer programs for students and adults alike. The Collegiate Program for High School Students offers a challenging introduction to the liberal arts and the Catholic tradition. Offering three college credits, The Catholic Leadership Institute examines the social teachings of the Church and inspirational leaders while also providing a means to develop leadership skills in the outdoors and through a service project. KY Catholic Homeschool Conference

Saint Benedict's Homeschool Association is proud to be the sponsor of the First Annual KY Catholic Homeschool Conference.

For a little background information on our conference, it is being sponsored by our local homeschool group, Saint Benedict's Homeschool Association (SBHA), in conjunction with St. Christopher Cathoic Church and St. Helen Catholic Church. Kentucky has never had a Catholic homeschool conference and we decided to change that this year. Our hope is that this conference will grow and become a yearly event. The date of the Conference is scheduled for Saturday, June 5th. It will be held at St. Christopher's Parish in Radcliff, KY, in their old school building. We have invited all of the Catholic Homeschool Curriculum Vendors, plus math, language, and music vendors, etc. We also hope to have college reps there from Thomas Aquinas, Wyoming Catholic, Christendom, Thomas More, and Magdalen. Father Shannon Collins, of St. Helen's, will be celebrating the Latin Mass at 8AM. There will be confessions offered throughout the day. The Knights of Columbus will be providing complimentary coffee and continential breakfast after Mass. They will also provide lunch for a suggested donation of $6.00.

Our keynote speaker is Fr. Shannon Collins, a Fathers of Mercy priest. Additional speakers are Alicia Van Hecke, Joan Stromberg, Brian Corneilson, and Tim Fout. One more speaker will be announced shortly. We will also have a round table discussion.

Due to the close proximity to Ft. Knox and Louisville, we feel that Racliff, Kentucky is an excellent place to host this event. Ft. Knox is part of the Base Realignment and Closure project and we are expecting to see approximately 13,000 new people move into our area by September 2011. With this new influx of military and civilian employees to our area, we hope to see an increase in homeschooling families. We have already started to receive several inquiries from new families expecting to be relocated here within the year. Our hope is to provide these new families with the homeschool support that they need.

Our conference is primarily being marketed throughout Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, and Tennessee; of course, those from other areas are more than welcome.

Ranching Opportunity for Interested Homeschooling Family

Aloha Everyone:

I received an email from a gentlemen in Colorado. I do not know him, nor can I vouch for him. I am merely sharing his offer here with all of you.

I am writing because I thought you might be able to share information with some family who would benefit from it. Here’s the situation that might be an opportunity for some homeschooling family.

My home is in southwestern Colorado. I have a small farm/ranch sandwiched in between the Southern Ute Reservation and the San Juan National Forest right on the Piedra River. My kids are all grown now. They homeschooled (in part) and went to St. Columba School in Durango for most of the rest. They were raised doing ranch chores and playing outdoors with their own livestock and the freedom to roam miles and miles of open country around the ranch. We were very active in the 2 Durango parishes and involved in the small rural mostly Hispanic missions out of Immaculate Heart in Pagosa Springs. It was, for me, the ideal place to raise kids: we had no TV until they were nearly grown; their social circle was either family or neighbors or other children and adults from St. Columba’s. They learned farming and ranching skills and how to solve problems.

For the past few years I have worked in Maryland but hope someday to be back on the ranch after I retire. So here is where the opportunity comes in. Now the house sits vacant, weeds grow and I just go there to maintain the improvements. My cousin who lives nearby puts up a bit of hay from the meadowland. And occasionally my kids take their kids to fish in the river.

I suspect that somewhere out there is a hardy family who wants to garden, raise a little livestock, homeschool their kids, and insulate themselves a bit from some of the coarseness of the prevalent culture. We built an adobe house, erected a 40 x 60 barn, a lot of fencing, a big garden, etc. Let me say at the outset that this would not be for everybody. Ranch life takes a special kind of person. Winter snows and spring mud can make access difficult. Livestock ties you down. When something breaks, you have to figure out how to fix it. It’s a long way to town, especially in the winter. You have to get your coal and wood in before the cold weather comes… I could go on and on.

On the other hand, when I see what my kids (now 25-33 years old), can do –how they plan and work, how they help others (don’t get me started) – I am grateful that we were able to live there during their formative years. God has been very good to us!

But let me get back on track. Might there be folks in your circle or readers of your blog to whom this situation would be a blessing? If so, how could we connect with them? I would really appreciate your thoughts and ideas about how this (currently) idle resource could benefit some family.

Dear Esther,

Thank you for your email response. I would rent the entire 80 acres, barn, sheds, corral, kennels, chicken house, etc for $800 a month plus utilities. However, I would return up to $150 of that 800 during the following month to reimburse materials and supplies used the previous month for maintenance and conservation of the farm and buildings.

I will be there for some time the second half of March and would be glad to show an interested family around.

Dear Catholic Families,

My name is Bonnie Landry. We are a Catholic home schooling family with seven children, ages 4-24, living on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. Some of you I know well, some of you I have met personally, and some of you are people I have met via my blog, Practicing Mammal, www.practicingmammal.blogspot.com and some of you are friends of friends. Some of you are even families of friends of my college age kids! I hope you don’t mind this mild invasion of your time. This is a very preliminary inquiry to see if there is enough interest generated in to make the following invitation a worthwhile venture.

Flying Inns

Bring your toothbrush. Bring your guitar.

Bring your family. Bring your earplugs.

Flying Inns is a network of Catholic families, living out the fullness of their vocation. In a spirit of generosity and hospitality, families across North America open up their homes to traveling families for the purpose of fellowship and inexpensive travel.

I am hoping to start this organization/forum for faithful Catholic home schooling families to travel, host, visit other families around North America. To keep this idea simple, I believe it should start off as a “word of mouth” grassroots movement. I am collecting names of people who I have met, or who are friends of friends who would like to be part of a network across North America of families who are willing to host other Catholic home schooling families.

While this list will not remain exclusive to families that are home schooling, that is where I feel I need to start as we are dealing with different flexibility than families with children in school. That said, older couples, newlyweds, single faithful Catholics or families with children in school could participate if they are interested. The main “requirement” is faithfulness to Holy Mother Church.

As opposed to an “exchange” network, I envision this being, in the spirit of generosity and hospitality, a means of offering what we have for the opportunity of fellowship.

This is what I am proposing:

Families put their name in a pool, giving the area in which they live.

Families are under no obligation. They can host as much or as little as they wish throughout a year. Cancelling a potential guest or guests, however, should only happen under dire circumstances.

Some basic information is given in a host/guest profile, such as:

A family profile or biography.

How many people they are able to host, in beds or on the floor. Or tent space for that matter.

Whether the host family would provide bedding, or whether the travellers would provide their own.

Willingness to host families, or also students or young “home school grads” who are wanting to travel.

Contact information that would be contained within the website.

Where and when families or individuals would like to travel.

References.

A three day stay limit would be determined. That stay could be extended, completely at the discretion of the host.

Normally, meals would be provided. However, there may be situations where the two parties work out something else, such as a young couple who would like to be involved, and have the floor space for several, but providing meals for a family of nine or ten might be prohibitive!

Or, travelers may have days that they would be out sight seeing, and only needs sleeping space some of the time they are visiting. Singles may want to request help with transportation (ie being picked up from a bus or train). These individual needs will be worked out by the parties involved. It would be my ideal that on a website, there would be a list of questions for the hosts and guests to ask each other to better determine how the stay will play out.

Any families that show interest will not be published in any form until a more concrete system has been established. I will contact people with a profile to fill out before any kind of publishing of names. At this point, I would like to see if there is a reasonable amount of willing families to establish a pool. If there is, we will establish a website and start some promotion.

This will NOT be a for profit venture; this is a ministry. If any advertising is considered on the website, it would be for covering costs of maintaining this ministry, and it would be advertising relevant to Catholic families.

My prayer for this venture is to create a Catholic network for the beautiful and faithful domestic churches all over North America. To provide hospitality and fellowship, and the opportunity to travel affordably.
